When tourists embark on their journeys, they often seek essential information about the city they’re visiting, such as navigation, transportation options, recommended dining and drinking establishments, and staying connected with friends and family. Their reliance on smartphones for communication, research, entertainment, and photography is substantial. Understanding the challenges they face, our service system aims to provide convenient solutions, particularly when dealing with battery depletion.

As tourists typically have limited time to explore a city, maximizing their experience becomes a top priority. Offering a 24-hour window for charger returns ensures that they can make the most of their time without worrying about their devices running out of power. In a city as culturally rich as Amsterdam, with numerous attractions to explore, our message should emphasize the convenience of “you charge” while immersing oneself in the city’s offerings.

Since our consumers come from diverse corners of the world, our system should cater to multiple languages or incorporate a universal language option. Furthermore, recognizing the significant influence of social media on our target group, utilizing these platforms for promotional purposes would be an optimal strategy to reach and engage with them effectively.

Market Research

The problem we encountered when designing our PSS is that we were struggling with finding a strategic place where to position our power bank stations. Hence the goal of the market research was to identify the best locations for our charging stations to be placed. We want to attract the most customers and understand when and where they will use our charging stations. We thought that creating a questionnaire would be an appropriate research method. The responses we received were mostly from young people, students. This demographic is more likely to own a phone and have knowledge about technology and travel.

The questionnaire consisted of two questions: “In which areas or locations would you expect to find charging stations for your portable power bank? (Select all that apply)” with the options airport, train/bus station, hotel/accommodation, shopping malls, restaurants/cafes, sightseeing spots, parks/recreational areas, city center, anywhere with high foot traffic, indoor lounge, in the train and bus/schools.

Most of the people, 80,6% picked airport and train/bus station, the second highest was shopping malls with 64,5%, and the city center with 51,6%. The second question was: “Considering your travel activities, when would you most likely need access to charging stations? (Select all that apply)” with the options: during transportation(train/bus/metro), while exploring tourist attractions, during breaks at restaurants/cafes, during shopping sessions, I don’t need them, whenever my phone is low on battery. The highest score was 67,7% during transportation and during breaks at restaurants/cafes, and second place at 48,4% while exploring tourist attractions. The placement of our power bank stations however is not possible in airports and train stations due to our subscription plans. The consumer needs to return the battery which is not possible if they are travelling.

In conclusion, the most optimal location for our consumers would be a shopping mall/city center. Where most of our tourists will be shopping and strolling around the city. Also while exploring tourist attractions and during breaks at restaurants/cafes.

Popular Tourist Attractions

These are the best locations for our power bank stations. For the best shopping experience, our locations could be in places of interest and attractions, where our customers mostly shop and do activities such as sightseeing or sitting and eating at restaurants. The museum presents an excellent opportunity for our facilities, as it offers visitors a spacious area to relax and unwind after exploring the exhibits. Our services would be an optimal choice for individuals seeking a comfortable and convenient space to make use of, whhich is located around number 32: Rijksmuseum. However, in order to determine whether we will be able to place our stations, we will need access from the government. Also, tryouts to see if these locations are as good as we thought they would be should be done as well as additional research.
