Style of the Power Bank

Requirements

The design should:

  • Be ergonomic for the hand 
  • Fit the general dimensions for the phone and the hand 
  • Clearly state which part to stick to the phone 
  • Show the battery percentage 

The values of our power bank include comfort, cleanness, and organic design; but it was also desired to incorporate the technological aspects of our brand image. This was added through blue lights coming from under the power bank. To add a minimalistic value, we did not add anything distracting to the power bank but the logo. We wanted to make the power bank as comfortable as possible. 

A detailed collage was made to obtain a better understanding of the power bank’s values. In this collage, the smooth and clean material finishes can be seen, next to the inspiration for the blue light. Moreover, the separate light dots represent the battery percentage of the power bank.  

Instruction Design for the Power Bank

The design process of the power bank prioritizes security, comfort, and modern design. To achieve these objectives, we conducted a user test study and used the average hand dimensions of people. The user test study was made of clay in a variety of shapes, and several people were interviewed to obtain their feedback on how the different shapes were perceived.

Based on the feedback from the user testing the 3rd shape was chosen for the final design of the power bank.

Average dimensions

The average dimensions of adult males’ and females’ hands were discovered to be:

Males 

A (hand length): 187.9 mm 

B (hand breadth: 4 fingers): 83.6 mm 

C (grip breath inside width diameter): 44.5 mm 

D (grip breath inside length diameter): 35.6cm 

Females 

A (hand length): 167.9 mm 

B (hand breadth: 4 fingers): 75.2 mm 

C (grip breath inside width diameter): 32.2 mm 

D (grip breath inside length diameter): 25.7 mm 

All 

A (hand length): 177.9 mm 

B (hand breadth: 4 fingers): 79.4 mm 

C (grip breath inside width diameter): 38.3 mm 

D (grip breath inside length diameter): 30.7 mm

These physical dimensions were considered during the design process of the power banks, but they were not strictly implemented in the final design due to the inherit ergonomic grip from the chosen design.

A study was also conducted to analyze the size of an average phone to have a general idea of the appropriate size of the power bank.

Dimensions of power bank

The final power bank dimensions were a result of the research mentioned above. The result is an ergonomic grip that fits comfortably and intuitively in the users’ hands due to its shape. The design also takes into account the ability to hold and use the phone while the power bank is charging it. This allows a comfortable and user friendly experience for our customers. All the dimensions shown in the visuals are all in mm.

Furthermore, to ensure that users know which side to connect the power bank to the phone, a light is added to the bottom side of the power bank, which illuminates when the connection is made. Moreover, the MagSafe also serves as a que to which side to stick to the phone for the IPhone users. Also, as the magnetic ability is not for all phones suction cups were added behind the power bank in order to ensure that the power bank stays on the phones for comfortable use. Additionally, the power bank includes four lights that indicate the remaining battery level, with each light representing 25% of the battery capacity.
