Refugees living in a camp designed for 3000

Moria is located on the island Lesvos and is the largest refugee camp in Greece. On 8 September 2020, a catastrophic fire broke out, burning the original camp Moria to the ground. This left around 12 000 refugees without shelter, food, or access to health-care services. The living conditions in Camp Moria are inhumane. Food is only handed out once or twice a day, and there is a lack of running water for washing and drinking.

Water

The refugees in Camp Moria share a water tap with up to 325 people.

Personal space

The refugees in Camp Moria have about 3,5 square meters of personal space.

Housing

The refugees in Camp Moria share a tent with up to 20 people.

Currently, around 8 000 refugees live in Camp Moria 2.0. They have a total of 70 nationalities, with the largest groups being from Afghanistan, Syra, and Iraq.

Ethnicity, age and gender

Camp Moria 2.0 is located next to the sea and is mostly exposed to north winds. Due to the proximity to the sea the camp has already flooded multiple times. The 880 family tents and 10 rubhalls are not insulated and therefore very cold. Refugees have no way to protect themselves against the cold and humidity, since not enough blankets or clothes were handed out.
