Sustainability

  • Our company is also very concerned with sustainability. Nowadays we think it is more important than ever to try and make a change for the better. Currently, dental care products use a lot of plastic, most of the time more than needed. Many products have extra packaging material when sold from shops and a lot of items are single-use items. So we, DentiBox, try to reduce this as much as possible.
  •
  • First off, we have a collaboration with ReBox. Rebox is a company that innovates in sustainable shipping packaging. They opt to implement reusable shipping boxes instead of the conventional cardboard box. This way when we ship you the DentiBox no cardboard is used which is better for the environment. •
  • Secondly, by not having to pack every product individually, we save lots of packing material and also cost, making it more sustainable and cheaper! For example: If you would buy each product individually at a shop they all will be packed as well. In the DentiBox less material is used as it is sent together as one, with the sustainable shipping method of ReBox. DentiBox also acts as a resupply or refill for your products, as that’s what some of our products only need. For example; a refill for rinsing water instead of an entirely new bottle.
  • Besides that, we also aim to reduce the use of single-use products. Currently, a lot of dental care products use lots of plastic while you can only use them a few times. With the products included in the DentiBox that’s not the case. We aspire to use as little unnecessary plastic as possible. We try to achieve this by designing our products in a specific way that lots of the products can be reused and only a small part needs to be replaced from time to time. This is for example the case with our interdental brushes, where the grip can be reused continuously while only the small brush itself needs to be replaced. Also within the stand products like floss and toothpicks can be stored, so that no extra packaging for that is needed.
  • In conclusion, with the DentiBox we strive to reduce the current plastic footprint of dental care products as much as possible because not only do we want to initiate a healthy mouth, we also want to initiate a healthy world!

  • Sustainable alternative for dental products

  • Biodegradable toothbrush
  • Plastic ones can be easily replaced with bamboo options. This material has fast-growing, minimal water required, easily harvested, and takes only around six months to break down in compost.
  •
  • Electric toothbrush
  • When it comes to electric toothbrushes, there are many different parts, all of which come with environmental concerns.
  • If a toothbrush requires replaceable batteries, it is likely to end up with either waste or a battery that is difficult to recycle. One sustainable alternative can be replacing the batteries with a plug-in electric toothbrush, which will be powered via a home´s power supply.
  •
  • When it comes to the pieces and parts of the electric toothbrush, bamboo is not a feasible alternative to metal and plastic. However, it can be possible to make a recycling scheme where it is possible to send back the handle and batteries to be recycled properly.
  •
  • Toothpaste and mouthwash:
  • For toothpaste and mouthwash, a sustainable option can be chewpaste tabs. They are made with all-natural non-toxic ingredients like natural polishing agents, plant-based magnesium stearate, baking soda, etc. The toothpaste tabs can be held in a glass jar with a steel lid.
  •
  • Dental floss:
  • Most dental floss is made of plastic, which means that most dental floss is also toxic. One alternative option can be floss made with things like silk (non-vegan), biodegradable bamboo fiber, or biodegradable nylon and commonly uses beeswax or candelilla wax to allow that floss to effectively slide between teeth.

Maintenance

  • Maintenance won’t play a big role in our product-service system other than maybe maintainability and serviceability in our service part. This is because we won’t have many long-term-use physical objects.
  • The only long-term used object is the electric toothbrush. The average lifespan of an electric toothbrush is around 3-5 years. The brand where we collaborate with is Oral-B. Oral-B will offer the electric toothbrush for the ‘DentiBox’. The warranty of the electric toothbrush will likely take care of the maintenance. So our product-service system does not have any maintenance for the electric toothbrush. This is also the case for other products from brands, their warranty policy will likely cover it.
  •
  • The service part consist of the following components:
  •       Website for clients: to find information, details about their subscription and order subscription.
  •       Website for the dentist: to fill in the form for new clients and alter the subscription for existing customers.
  •       App for clients: Where they can login to see their details of the subscriptions.
  •
  • On average, dentists are open every Monday to Friday from 8:30 till 17:00. Some dentists are also open on Saturdays and some open in the evening normally till 20:00. The best moment to maintain the website for the dentist is from Monday till Friday from 20:30 till 7:30 or on Sundays. The least amount of website-visitors and app-users are weekly from 1:00 till 6:00. So that would be the best time to do the maintenance for the app and the website part for clients.
  •
  • When the website for the dentist part is down they can use printed out forms instead and then fill it in later on the website when it is working again. If the website for the clients and the app is down then they can contact the company through email.

End of life

  • The End of Life Cycle relates to sustainability of the whole journey a product takes from the manufacture of its constituent materials to its use and end of life. When it comes to End of Life, sustainability is a fundamental aspect that should be taken into consideration when developing a business model for a circular economy.
  • Most dental products are made out plastic which after of its use ends up in a landfill and never makes the circular journey to being recycled or reused which makes negative impact to the environment. In this context, our company is aware of how vulnerable our planet is, therefore, our commitment to human well-being and our efforts is to act in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Although sustainability within the dental practice may seem like a large task, there are some steps that can make the difference. For example, looking for alternatives to plastic products.  Hence one of the future initiatives for DentiBox is to launch a product line with materials 100% recyclable.
  •
  • One of the options is Bamboo. This material has fast growing, minimal water required, easily harvested and which takes only around six months to break down in compost. There are already many brands on the market which have introduced these products on their catalogue. For example, Oral B and Colgate, MABLE, etc.
  • Another option would be using products from sugar cane and 100% bio-based filaments from castor oil. To ensure the filaments are secured safely to the head, metal pins are used, making the toothbrush 96% bio-based.
