Including insurance or not?

  • In the Netherlands you have a general health insurance and a supplementary health insurance. You are obligated to buy the general one but can increase your package or buy different supplementary health from another company.
  • Dental health care is not included in this general package which means you would already need a different package if you would like to include dental health care.
  • Option 1: including the Dentibox to supplementary health insurance
  • This option would be to add the application to the insurance package for an additional fee. It would be added to the insurance option where dental treatments are already covered. This would mean the insurance would pay for the extra advice on products and the chatting service included in the service and maybe the starting package so that you have a healthy start. You could also have the option that a basic package would be for free and additional products can be sold by yourself.
  • It would be beneficial to you because the threshold to go to a dentist would be lower and your dental care products would be brought at home.
  • It would be beneficial to the insurance because this would mean dental care improves and they would not have to pay for expensive dental treatments.
  • Extra option: bonus malus system
  • An additional option to this system could be the bonus malus system. This is a system used at car insurance. The bonus malus system rewards drivers that do not use their insurance since they don’t damage their cars. You have a ladder with different steps. Every step gives you a certain discount on your car insurance. If you haven’t used your car insurance for a long time your discount can become very big.
  • You could add this to your dental health care by giving a discount on the dental health care if you have not used the insurance for the bigger dental treatments for a long time.
  •
  • Some benefits would be that you are sure the dental care package will be used since the benefits for the user have grown. The incentive of a discount on their care would be there.
  • The negative side would be that there would be a lot of extra legislation involved for quite a small amount of money. The insurance would be significantly lower than car-insurance which would mean the discounts with every step of the ladder would also be very small.
  • Option 2: creating our own dental health insurance
  • Another option is to create your own supplementary dental insurance. This would mean an insurance solely focussed on your dental needs aside from your general health insurance package. This way you can include the package, the bonus malus system and other dental treatments mentioned above for a certain fee a month.
  •
  • The downside from this is that the entire responsibility lies within the company and it would be a lot harder to attract consumers. The company itself is responsible for selling the concept to the consumers, not the insurance company.
  • Besides that it would also mean a lot of extra legislation and negotiation with all of the different dentists to create a new insurance company. You would want every dutch dentist to cooporate since consumers don’t want to take the effort to change dentist.
  •
  • Option 3 : dental care package sold to employers
  • This would be similar to the option of free fitness centra in your work environment.
  • You would sell the dental care package to your employer. If you convince them that with this product dental health will be easier and will not take up as much time as before.
  • Option 4: making the dental care package a stand alone service
  • Making the dental package as a stand alone product/service comes with a whole range of difficulties, but also a lot of advantages.
  •
  • The main reason to do so is, to not be dependent on insurance companies that may drop your service in a couple of years, this could bankrupt the company. Also there is a chance that insurance companies wont even pick it up in the first place. Therefore there should be a good strategy for making it work without insurance companies.
  • When not using insurance, the price point will become a more discussed point, because people will compare it to buying their stuff on their own. Therefore we will need an estimate on how much money people spend on their oral health products and compare it with that, making sure the improvements will be worth it.
  • In these costs we need to take into account the cut for the dentist, which we need to pay to promote and use our product, in addition to all the other costs like packing, shipping, production and promotion. Also there will be less of a priority on proving the effectiveness of the products because people will believe the effectiveness easier than the insurance companies, who will dig deeper. This makes the focus on marketing also bigger because the consumers are the ones that need to be convinced, not the insurance companies.
  •
  • Conclusion
  • Option 1 and 3 are both viable options for this product service system and the market we live in. The biggest difference between the two options would be who we sell the product service to and who then manages the company.
  • Because of the advantages of both options we wanted to create a way in between option 3 and 1. The offer will then be complete dental problem prevention for your customer; including the dental care products, a half year check up with your dentist and a chatting service with an expert. This deal will include all of the dental care, but not the expensive treatments of your teeth since that would be prevented (if all is right).
