Final Product

For the design for Specific User’s Project of module 7 a product had to be designed that was specifically made for one person with a disability. This person is called the co-designer because he will design the product together with the design team. The co-designer that was assigned to this design team was visually impaired.

The product that the design team came up with is called Lightmate:

It’s a multifunctional light that can be attached to cylindrical shapes with different diameters. This is useful for the case owner because it can be attached either to his cane or his dog leash, both with different thicknesses.

The way it works is that there are magnets on both parts of the light, making the 2 parts of the light stick together when it is closed. The spring mechanism enables the product to adapt to different thicknesses and consequently be able to be mounted on different size canes.

The light has indents on the top and bottom making it easy for the co-designer to find the location for opening and closing the lamp.

It has a switch making it easy for the co-designer to feel if the lamp is on or off.

The product also vibrates when the switch is pressed with two sets of vibrations. The first one is to indicate if the light is about to turn off or on and the second set is for battery indication.

The first set will be one longer vibration when turned on and 2 shorter vibrations when turned off.

The second set will be three vibrations of the same length for 50 % of the battery or more, two vibrations for 25% or more, and one vibration for 25 % or less.

When placed around the dog collar of a visually impaired person the product should look something like this:
