Frugal Innovation

The concept of frugality ensures that a simple, cheap and effective solution is created. These characteristics make frugal innovation appropriate for developed and emerging markets, reaching out to those who need the most help.

Cost Effective

Technologies focused on frugality should have low manufacturing and maintenance costs and be built with limited and accessible resources.

Core Functions

The design focuses on core functions to safeguard ease-of-use and efficacy of the performed function. No extras or luxury are needed.

Optimal Performance

With the resources available, products should have optimal performance, ensuring the most essential needs are fulfilled.

A revolution in innovation

Frugal innovations are necessary to stabilize and help the ever-changing world. Between 1970 and 2014, the world animal population has decreased by 60%, excluding insects. In combination with this mortifying statistic, it is estimated that human’s exploit Earth’s resources at a staggering rate of 125 trillion dollars per year. These statistics are only two between the tremendous amount of worrisome data. These are evidence that frugal innovations are coming to revolutionize the way we deplete the nature of its resources.

For those who need it most

Frugal innovation focuses on the basic needs. It models itself in  bottom-up solutions, that are made by and designed for those who need help the most. It considers the lack of resources and facilities to design solutions for problems in their specific context.

Do MORE with LESS

Frugal innovations use only resources that are already there. By recycling, reusing, and refabricating materials that are already present, it ensures a sustainable and effective use of resources.

The design uses natural materials; the requested plastic bottle can be recycled. It is simple to construct and can last up to 5 years, making the design frugal. Even though it is a simple solution, many lives will be changed for the better.
