Housing for Dharavi

Dharavi is the biggest slum in India. Many of Dharavi’s inhabitants live in poorly constructed houses with no connection to water and sanitation. The extremely scarce space and lack of land rights complicate the design and construction of new houses.
As an individual project, I designed a modular housing system which enables Dharavi’s inhabitants to build refined and personalized versions of their old houses while not destroying the characteristics of the Dharavi neighborhood. I also developed an implementation strategy that includes strategies for funding, land rights and the encouragement of Dharavi’s inhabitants to upgrade their houses, namely by first upgrading the streets and other communal areas.
