Evolutionary Product Development consists of two courses: the research course and the design course. In the research course, the history of a certain product category and product has to be analysed, in this case the bicycle with the Batavus BUB as main product. In the second course, the research has to be used to design and prototype the next generation for the main product. My goal in the design was to build a practical city proof bicycle, such as the first BUB. Most of the competition had nice designed bicycles but without luggage carrier for aesthetic reasons (e.g. Van Moof). I wanted to create a luggage carrier that was integrated with the frame to not break the design. Other features were integrated as well, such as the rear break mount and the rear fender. Another feature was that the frame went over the chain instead of through, to accommodate a maintenance and oil free drive belt. Because the prototyping of a bicycle is very complex, I was allowed to only prototype a small portion or make a scale model. Instead I chose to take my time and build the complete bicycle with permission of the professor. I build the frame from straight tubing only, the big tube is even sawed in, bent by hand, and welded shut again over the whole length. It took me four weeks to build, but the result was worth it!
